Next May 24th this masterpiece of the Victorian art will celebrate 180 years during which it has been preserved exactly as it was when Prince Consort Albert gave it as a gift to his beloved Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom, on the occasion of her twenty-sixth birthday. It is a miniature that bears the signature of the Court painter Sir William Ross (1794-1860) and that portrays the little Victoria Princess Royale, their first-born daughter, at the age of 4; the portrait, of a circular shape, has been set in a gold frame decorated with blue champlevé enamel and four pearls that highlight its perfect squareness, the work of the Court Master William Essex (1784-1869).
You have to know that this jewel is very small, measuring exactly 3x3 cm.,and fully satisfied the passion that Queen Victoria had for portraits, especially miniatures, in which Ross was able to express all his artistic talent.

As you can see on its back there's the date of birth of the Royal girl, a round inset with locks of her hair, and the date of that Queen Victoria's birthday, together with the dedication of Albert.
On 24 May 1857 Victoria would have turned 38. In the meantime, the Royal Family had grown, she and Albert had given birth to five more children: Albert on 9 November 1841, Alice on 25 April 1843, Alfred on 6 August 1844, Helena on 25 May 1846, Louise on 18 March 1848. On that day, when their mother celebrated her thirty-eighth birthday, they had all already turned 4, and Albert had an idea: why couldn't a miniature of rare beauty and workmanship that immortalised little Victoria 12 years earlier couldn't become a link in a bracelet portraying their six children? And so he turned to the same artists, Ross and Essex, to ask them to help him to realise this project of his. The result was astonishing. Queen Victoria was delighted and wrote in her diary:
that among her presents there was, '...a bracelet in enamel with pearls at the corners, to hold miniatures of the Children. Albert intends kindly to give me a miniature of the Children, as they attain the age of 4 years.'

Queen Victoria's Inventory of Jewels states that it was received in three parts: the first miniature was given by Queen Victoria to Prince Albert for his birthday, 26th August 1854. Portrait of Prince Leopold added on 24th May 1857 and the portrait of Princess Beatrice added on 24th May 1861. It was left to King Edward VII.

Il prossimo 24 maggio questo capolavoro, frutto dell'arte vittoriana, compirà 180 anni durante i quali si è conservato tale e quale era quando il principe consorte Albert ne fece dono alla sua amata Victoria, la regina del Regno Unito, in occasione del suo ventiseiesimo compleanno. Si tratta di una miniatura che reca la firma del pittore di Corte Sir William Ross (1794-1860) e che ritrae la piccola Victoria Principessa Realr, la loro figlia primogenita, all'età di 4 anni; il ritratto, di forma circolare, è stato incastonato in una cornice d'oro decorato con smalto champlevé blu e quattro perle che ne mettono in luce la perfetta quadratura, opera del maestro di Corte William Essex (1784-1869).
Pensate che questo gioiello è piccolissimo, misura esattamente cm 3x3 ed appagò appieno la passione che la regina Victoria nutriva per i ritratti, soprattutto quelli in miniatura, in cui Ross era in grado di esprimere tutto il suo talento artistico.

Come potete vedere sul retro è incisa la data di nascita della bimba reale e quella del compleanno della regina Victoria.
Il 24 maggio 1857 la regina del Regno Unito avrebbe compiuto 38 anni. Nel frattempo la famiglia si era ampliata, a lei ed Albert erano nati altri cinque bimbi: Albert il 9 novembre del 1841, Alice il 25 aprile del 1843, Alfred il 6 agosto del 1844, Helena il 25 maggio del 1846, Louise, il 18 marzo del 1848. Tutti, per quel giorno in cui la loro mamma festeggiava il suo trentottesimo compleanno, avevano già compiuto 4 anni e ad Albert venne perciò un'idea: perché quella che era una miniatura di rara bellezza e fattura che immortalava la piccola Victoria 12 anni prima non potava diventare una maglia di un braccialetto che ritraeva i loro sei figli? E così si rivolse agli stessi artisti, Ross e Essex, per chiedere loro di aiutarlo a realizzare questa suo progetto. Il risultato fu sbalorditivo. Victoria ne fu entusiasta e scrisse nel suo diario:
... che tra i suoi regali vi era '..un braccialetto di smalto con perle agli angoli, per contenere le miniature dei bambini. Albert intende gentilmente donarmi una miniatura dei bambini, quando raggiungeranno l'età di 4 anni'.

A quel tempo erano già nati anche Arhtur (1 maggio 1850), Leopold (7 aprile 1853) e Beatrice (14 aprile 1857), ma nessuno poteva sapere che anche loro avrebbero raggiunto e superato l'età di 4 anni: Nel 1861, perciò, Albert pensò di commissionare un altro braccialetto, nove miniature erano davvero troppe per il polso di Victoria e così venne creato questo:

L'inventario dei gioielli della Regina Vittoria reca scritto che questo gioiello fu ricevuto in tre parti: la prima miniatura fu donata dalla Regina Vittoria al Principe Alberto per il suo compleanno, il 26 agosto 1854. Il ritratto del Principe Leopoldo fu aggiunto il 24 maggio 1857 e il ritratto della Principessa Beatrice fu aggiunto il 24 maggio 1861. Fu lasciato a Re Edoardo VII.
Sono certa che siate rimasti incantati da tanta raffinatezza che solo quell'epoca e i maestri d'arte che lavoravano allora erano in grado di realizzare e donarci.
