A Victorian Afternoon Tea in our Secret Garden

An afternoon tea or Victorian tea party may be one of the most delightful and informal affairs in the whole social round or it may be an unmitigated bore. It all depends upon the hostess. If she is a wise woman she will limit her guests to the afternoon tea to the number her house can accommodate with ease, and have her hours long enough to avoid all coming at the same time; she will have some regard to making her guests to her afternoon tea acquainted if they have not already met; and she will furnish forth her tea table so invitingly that those who come perfunctorily will remain to chat over the teacups, and pay her the compliment of forgetting the time of day.

I was given the opportunity to create a tea like those dictated by the Victorian tradition by Stephanie of the charming blog THE ENCHANTING ROSE, who, sweet and dear to me more and more, sent me so many goodies in an envelope filled with plenty of love ... an unexpected gift, coming from far away, but as you all know the distances are canceled when the feelings are strong and true ... to reciprocate to her delicate gesture, which really filled my heart with joy, I decided to invite her to this virtual tea ... but believe me, here there's a place for each of you !

Our days are becoming milder, day by day, and our SECRET GARDEN seems to invite us,

with its slow awakening ...

with the delicate sound of the water flowing from and to everywhere, creating an harmony of natural spontaneity that caresses the hearing winning the passing of the time,

with the game of the butterflies amusing themselves among the fragrant flowers of the privet bush beside the gazebo,

with the old elder tree in flower which, like every year, greets, with its tiny, sweet, countless efflorescences, the good season

and the rose garden, which we skirt to reach it, that begins to show the first roses of the year, blooming as timid as ever,

but starting with scenting the air heralding the arrival of the hottest months of the year ...

And then what better place where to spend our time together?

During the Victorian period that of the Afternoon Tea was the main occasion of meeting, both for Ladies and for Gentlemen ( something else was the High Tea that, as I told you months ago: it was served on a large table and was especially a time when feasting, because they were served not only sweet treats, but also savory food, including sandwiches, pieces of cold meat and pretzels), and, according to the tradition, I thought to serve some homemade pastries keeping chocolate as a dominant theme, always having in mind the what the Victorian era rules dictated: I have prepared some shortcakes, stuffed with a white chocolate cream, and some chocolate shortcakes enriched with chopped hazelnuts and candied orange peel.

And if the Victorian tradition wanted that on the table there were always arranged roses in bloom, to perfume this late afternoon I picked those, facing south and climbing on the main facade of Tenuta Geremia, that are about to complete their first flowering just reaching the pinnacle of their gracefulness, the beautiful, irresistible Geoff Hamilton, with the many nuances of ancient pink and the intense scent,

the first English roses from David Austin which knew our estate and given the lushness that they soon shown, they have encouraged us to give life to the collection which we're preserving with much love; a Victorian Tea should always be illuminated by alight candles, whatever is the time of day and the brightness around it

and as for the 'equipment' I've had no doubt, I decorated our little table with what I inherited by my Grandparents, indeed, my beloved Grandmothers ...

Finally I prepared two little dishes with a slice of a pie made with plums - even the seasonal fruit was often present on the table of the Afternoon Tea -, pastries filled with custard cream and a shortcake made with hazelnuts stuffed with dark chocolate, what we call 'Baci di dama'.

I was forgetting to tell you that we are never alone here ... anyway ... besides squirrels that always accompany our days outdoors

and bunnies coming from the PRAIRIE below, even if we do not see them, curious elves peep a little anywhere ... well, to reach the SECRET GARDEN you have to walk along the ELVES' PATH and just every little thing recalls their attention ...

Althought my neighbours are all barbarians,

And you, you are a thousand miles away,

There are always two cups on my table.

Un 'afternoon tea' o un 'Victorian tea party' possono essere uno degli eventi più piacevoli e informali in tutto il sociale, o un fallimento assoluto. Tutto dipende dalla padrona di casa. Se ella è una donna saggia che limiterà i suoi ospiti per il tè del pomeriggio al numero che la sua casa può ospitare con facilità, e vi dedicherà ore sufficienti per evitare che tutti i convenuti si accalchino allo stesso tempo; se avrà qualche riguardo per far sì che al suo tè i suoi ospiti si conoscano se mai si sono incontrati prima; e fornirà luce al suo tavolo da tè in modo da invitare coloro che vengono di volta in volta a rimanere per qualche chiacchiera, meriterà così i complimenti per aver creato un momento indimenticabile in cui si è persa la cognizione del tempo.

L'occasione per ricreare un tè del tutto simile a quello dettato dalla tradizione vittoriana mi è stata offerta da Stephanie del delizioso blog THE ENCHANTING ROSE, la quale, dolcissima e sempre più cara, mi ha inviato talmente tanti doni in una busta colma di amore ... un regalo inaspettato, proveniente da molto lontano, ma come tutti voi sapete le distanze si annullano quando i sentimenti sono forti e sinceri ... per ricambiare il suo gesto che mi ha realmente colmato il cuore di gioia, ho pensato di invitarla a questo tè virtuale ..., ma credetemi, qui c'è posto per ognuna di voi !

Le giornate da noi si fanno sempre più miti, il nostro GIARDINO SEGRETO sembra volerci invitare,

con il suono delicato delle sue acque che scorrono un po' ovunque, creando un'armonia di spontanea naturalezza che accarezza l'udito e che vince lo scorrere del tempo,

con il gioco delle farfalle che si trastullano tra i profumatissimi fiori del cespuglio di ligustro che affianca il gazebo,

con il vecchio albero di sambuco in fiore che, come ogni anno, saluta con le sue minuscole, dolcissime, innumerevoli efflorescenze la bella stagione

e con il roseto, che si fiancheggia per raggiungerlo, che comincia con l'esibire le prime rose della stagione, timide come non mai,

ma che iniziano con il profumare l'aria preannunciando l'arrivo dei mesi più caldi dell'anno ...

Ed allora quale luogo migliore per 'trascorrere' questo nostro tempo insieme ?

Durante il periodo vittoriano quella dell'Afternoon Tea era la principale occasione d'incontro, sia per le Ladies che per i Gentlemen ( altra cosa era l'High Tea che, come già vi dissi, era servito su di un grande tavolo ed era soprattutto un momento in cui banchettare, poiché su di esso non mancavano non solo leccornie dolci, ma anche prelibatezze salate, tra cui sandwiches, bocconcini di carne fredda e salatini ), e, come da rituale, ho pensato di servire alcuni pasticcini fatti in casa mantenendo tradizionalmente il cioccolato come tema dominante, avendo sempre bene a mente i dettami dell'epoca vittoriana: li ho preparati di pasta frolla semplice, farciti con una crema al cioccolato bianco e con frolla al cioccolato arricchita con nocciole tritate e scorzette di arancia candite.

E se la tradizione vittoriana vuole che al centro del tavolo siano sempre disposte delle rose in fiore, per profumare questo tardo pomeriggio ho cercato quelle che, esposte a sud e rampicanti sulla facciata principale di Tenuta Geremia, stanno quasi per ultimare la loro prima fioritura raggiungendo l'apice della loro leggiadria, le splendide, irresistibili Geoff Hamilton, dalle innumerevoli sfumature di rosa antico e dalla profumazione intensa,

le prime rose inglesi di David Austin che hanno conosciuto la nostra Tenuta e che dato il rigoglio che hanno manifestato, ci hanno invogliato a dar vita alla collezione che tutt'ora conserviamo con amore; sempre il tè vittoriano deve essere illuminato da candele accese, qualsiasi sia l'ora del giorno e la luminosità che lo circonda

e per la scelta degli accessori non ho avuto alcun dubbio, ho decorato questo nostro tavolo con quanto ereditato dai nonni, anzi, dalle nonne ...

Infine ho preparato due piattini con una fetta di torta di prugne ciascuno - anche la frutta di stagione era spesso presente sul piccolo tavolo dell'Afternoon Tea -, pastine di frolla farcite di crema pasticcera ed un pasticcino fatto con pasta frolla alle nocciole farcita di cioccolato fondente, quelli che noi chiamiamo 'Baci di dama'.

Dimenticavo di dirvi che comunque qui non siamo mai soli ... oltre agli scoiattoli che sempre accompagnano le nostre giornate all'aperto

e ai coniglietti che, provenienti dalla PRATERIA sottostante, di quando in quando arrivano saltellando, anche se non li vediamo, folletti curiosi occhieggiano un po' ovunque ... dopotutto si percorre il SENTIERO DEI FOLLETTI per raggiungere il GIARDINO SEGRETO e con nulla si richiama la loro attenzione ...

Anche se i miei vicini di casa sono tutti barbari,

E voi siete a un migliaio di miglia di distanza,

Mi scuso con gli amici ed i lettori italiani se questa volta mi sono sentita di anteporre il testo in inglese a quello in italiano, ma rivolgendomi in primis a Stephanie, di madre lingua inglese e a tutto il pubblico che condivide il suo idioma, mi sembrava doveroso.
